Sabo, a survivor
The Marine Ford Summit War, in which the Whitebeard Pirates and the Navy clashed head-on, left an indelible scar on Luffy’s heart. Luffy’s brother-in-law, Ace, was killed in an attack by the naval general Akainu (Sakazaki). Many readers must have been shocked to learn that this was the first time a clear death was depicted in “One Piece,” which is known for not depicting the deaths of its characters. However, just before Ace’s death, the existence of another brother-in-law was revealed. Sabo. Sabo, a native of the noble class of the Kingdom of Goa, ran away from home because he had doubts about the environment in which he had been raised. After drifting ashore at the “Grey Terminal,” a trash heap in the suburbs, and exchanging a cup of tea with Luffy and Ace, he escaped from the country. Later, however, Sabo’s ship was sunk by the Tenryujin (World Nobility) and he was missing, so Luffy and Ace thought he was dead. Now, it is known that this Sabo was actually conceived from a very early stage. Perhaps the most famous is the “ASCE” tattoo on Ace’s left arm. This tattoo, with only the “S” marked with an X, was initially thought to be a correction of a spelling mistake, but now the mainstream interpretation is that it represents Sabo’s death. In addition, in the recollection of Ace and Luffy in the Marine Ford Summit War Arc, another edge of the sake cup is missing in the panel showing the two of them, and it was discussed that there might be another person who exchanged sake cups with him. There was a theory that Sabo might actually be alive. The clue is the grave of Ace and Whitebeard depicted in the door picture of episode 668. In the Jump, two sake cups are clearly depicted, although they are covered by advertisements, one as Luffy’s offering and the other as – ? The reader’s speculation is that the two cups were offered by Luffy, and that the other was – ? The reader’s speculation will be answered in the Dress Rosa Arc. Sabo, who has grown up to become the chief of staff of the Revolutionary Army, appears dashingly in front of Luffy. In fact, Sabo had been rescued by Dragon, the commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Army, after his ship sank. Although he had temporarily lost his memory after that, he regained it upon the death of Ace and stood up to his former ally in danger. Subsequently, Sabo inherited the mela mela fruit that Ace had eaten. He is expected to fight alongside Luffy as an important figure who holds the key to the world of “One Piece” in the future.
