Grandma Misako passed away.
Nine years ago, Chieko Ishida began an “amicable separation” from her father, Akira, in order to care for her mother, Misako. Chieko has been taking care of the family home by herself even after Misako’s dementia progressed and she entered a nursing home. Misako passed away on January 8, 2025. It was a few days after the New Year’s holiday, when many family members gathered at the family home where Akira and his second daughter, Meiko, lived, enjoying the festive time typical of the “Ishida-san family. Misako-san passed away quietly after eating a little lunch in the facility. Chieko was unable to take care of her, but for better or worse, she had no time to dwell on her grief and was busy making funeral arrangements and meetings.
● Eldest daughter returns home for the first time in 13 years
At the farewell ceremony, Naoko, his eldest daughter, returned to her hometown for the first time in 13 years. In her speech as a mourner, Chieko said, “Naoko, my first grandchild, showed her face for the first time in 13 years. I really feel that Misako-san guided me to this moment,” she said, expressing her heartfelt feelings. In the latter half of the program, the spotlight was on Naoko, who has been estranged from her family for many years. In a solo interview, she said of the close contact that began during her sensitive period, “I hated it. I hated it because I felt as if I had been sold to my parents.” She also shared her dissatisfaction with her parents and the program. Nevertheless, Misako’s death provided an opportunity for Naoko to reconnect with her long-divided family, and at a “make-up barbecue” organized by her eldest son, Takayuki, she and her father, Akira, were able to talk about what was on their minds.
